State Employment Rankings

The BLS released employment data for all state for July. On a year-over-year basis, Oregon’ employment growth is 9th best among all states. Even though Oregon has not added many net jobs over the past four months, the state is still doing better than the average state. The second graph below shows the number of states with positive month-over-month job gains. Oregon has seen month-over-month gains in 9 out of the past 10 months and 14 out of the past 19 months.

Note that Oregon’s ranking in July was affected by July 2010 being a bad employment month (-5,000 jobs), thus making year ago comparisons easier. With that being said, every month with have idiosyncratic data issues when looking at all 50 states and over time, these will all even out.
